This webinar is intended to present up to date information on advanced heart failure in patients living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), including general aspects and outcomes of modern antiretroviral therapies, understanding the pathophysiology of cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure (and kidney failure) in HIV+ patients, current application of cardiac heart replacement therapies including heart transplant and left ventricular support in this population, and explore further implementation of HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act in advanced heart failure patients.

Presentations

Living With HIV in 2023

This presentation will introduce the topic with brief historical perspective, current prevalence of HIV around world, and update the audience on long-term outcomes of modern antiretroviral therapy. Consider comparing long-term outcomes with other chronic viral pathologies such as HCV.

Presented by Jonathan Hand, MD

Etiology & Pathophysiology of Heart Failure in Patients Living with HIV

This presentation will discuss the epidemiology and pathophysiology of HIV-associated cardiomyopathy. Further, it will elaborate current understanding of development of cardiomyopathy in patients with long-standing HIV and discuss long-term outcomes. Finally, it will detail the current state and future directions of cardiomyopathy in patients living with HIV.

Presented by Nina Thakkar-Rivera, DO, PhD

Heart Replacement Therapies in HIV+: Patient Selection & Outcomes of Heart Transplant and LVAD Support

This presentation will discuss selection criteria of advanced heart failure patients living with HIV for heart transplant and LVAD support, discuss challenges in medical management (i.e. drug interactions / opportunistic infections), and present current mid-long term outcomes.

Presented by Maria Castel, MD, PhD

Is it Time for a New HOPE?

This presentation will discuss the impact of the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act, which was enacted in 2013, with the goal of developing and publishing research criteria related to kidney transplantation of HIV + donors into HIV + recipients, hoping to significantly increase the donor pool. Presenter will discuss the adoption of this practice and clinical impact on patients with chronic kidney failure, and the barriers / opportunities to adopt a similar approach in heart transplantation.
