ISHLT Will Honor Professor Allan Glanville with Lifetime Achievement Award at ISHLT2025
ISHLT
will honor the life and legacy of 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Allan Glanville, MBBS, MD, FRACP, as part of the 45th Annual ISHLT Meeting & Scientific Sessions in Boston on Monday,
28 April, 2025.
Professor Glanville was a visionary leader in the field of advanced lung failure and lung transplantation, a cherished mentor, and a beloved member of the ISHLT community. He is the first respiratory physician to receive this honor, which recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of thoracic transplantation and in the Society.
During General Session II in Boston, friends, colleagues, and family members will honor Professor Glanville and celebrate his contributions. Notable ISHLT members have been invited to speak during the presentation including ISHLT President, Christian Benden, MD; Vincent Valentine, MD; Paul Jansz, BMed, PhD, FRACS; Tereza Martinu, MD; and Peter Hopkins, FRACP.
Unbeknownst to many, Professor Glanville devoted much time outside long work hours to providing patient support and education as a Board Member of multiple patient-focussed charities. Professor Glanville joined the ISHLT in 1994, an organisation that he would reflect upon years later as being like “a second family”.
He mentored junior staff, formed international research collaboratives including the European and Australian Investigators in Lung Transplantation, was Editorial Board Consultant for JHLT for 15 years, Program Chair for the ISHLT Annual Meeting in Montreal 2013 and the following year, President of ISHLT, only the second Australian in the 44-year history of our society.
Professor Glanville would say his greatest reward from the ISHLT would be the many friendships with colleagues he cherished from around the world. Today, the ISHLT is a mature, diverse and welcoming organisation, a reflection of the unrelenting sense of duty, leadership and service of individuals like Professor Glanville who walked before us.
Peter Hopkins, FRACP
So many of us remember Professor Glanville as a beloved and outstanding lung transplant pulmonologist, a brilliant academic, a prolific writer, a sheep farmer, a tremendous mentor, and friend. Allan always seemed to do it all and to do it well.
At ISHLT2025, Professor Glanville will be posthumously awarded the 2025 ISHLT Lifetime Achievement Award for his immense contributions to the transplant community and to patients with advanced lung disease. While he will be greatly missed, Professor Glanville will continue to inspire us to learn more and to work together towards a brighter future for our patients.
Tereza Martinu, MD
The presentation during General Session II will be recorded and available online after the Annual Meeting.
