Call for Applications: Journal Watch Senior Editor
The ISHLT Early Career and Trainee Committee is seeking volunteers to apply for the role of ISHLT Journal Watch Senior Editor.
Summary
The Senior Editor will oversee the editorial content of ISHLT’s Journal Watch, a publication presented by the ISHLT Early Career and Trainee Committee in which junior faculty and trainees review recent key studies in the field and present their analysis for consideration. This volunteer will work closely with individual issue editors and ISHLT staff to provide editorial direction throughout the year and on individual issues, and provide logistical support as needed.
Term Length
The Journal Watch Senior Editor will serve a term of three years, with the role beginning on 1 May after the conclusion of the ISHLT’s Annual Meeting & Scientific Sessions. In their first year, they will serve concurrently with the outgoing Senior Editor. In their second year, they will serve alone. In their third year, they will serve concurrently with the incoming Senior Editor.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Journal Watch Senior Editor will be expected to:
- Lead the development of the annual editorial calendar for Journal Watch, ensuring that all ISHLT Professional Communities and Interdisciplinary Networks are represented throughout the year.
- Identify junior faculty leaders in the relevant specialties to edit each issue of Journal Watch.
- Advise individual issue editors and contributors on the content, format, and structure of their issue of Journal Watch.
- Assist individual issue editors in soliciting contributors as needed.
- Collaborate with ISHLT staff to ensure each issue of Journal Watch remains on schedule.
- Liaise with ISHLT’s Interdisciplinary Networks and Professional Communities to promote Journal Watch and help solicit studies.
In the emeritus year, the Senior Editor will:
- Provide mentorship to the incoming editor.
- Focus on outreach/promotions of Journal Watch while the incoming editor focuses on coordination of issues and contributors.
Qualifications
The Journal Watch Senior Editor should exhibit the following traits and characteristics:
- The ability to read journal articles across a range of topics and be critical and analytical.
- Motivated and organized, with the ability to keep up the momentum of a project.
- A community builder—ideally, the Journal Watch editor is a few years out of Fellowship and has developed some connections in the field, which makes it easier to source and identify contributors.
- Passionate about disseminating knowledge in advanced heart and lung failure/transplantation.
- Must be a member in good standing of ISHLT throughout the appointment.
Application Process
To apply for the role, interested parties must respond to the Call for Volunteers posted by the Early Career and Trainee Committee.
Applications will be open until 11:59 p.m. EST on Friday, 31 January, and will include a form, a brief written expression of interest, and 2-3 references, which must include ISHLT members in good standing.
Nominees will be notified of the decision of the Early Career and Trainee Committee by Friday, 21 March.
