A new ISHLT Standards & Guidelines Consensus Document, ISHLT 2024 Infection Definitions for Durable and Acute Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices, has been published in JHLT and is available to read online! Led by Saima Aslam and Ezequiel Molina, this document provides updated definitions for infections associated with durable MCS devices and new definitions for infections in acute MCS.

The main goals of this consensus document are to

  1. Develop definitions of infections that are pertinent to the field of MCS as a whole, including both durable and acute MCS devices
  2. Update the existing durable MCS device infection definitions
  3. Create new definitions for acute MCS devices
  4. Use a more simplified, clinical approach which could facilitate adoption for research and registry collection.
