Michelle Kittleson Named JHLT Interim Editor-in-Chief as Daniel Goldstein Steps Down Due to Health
CHICAGO, USA – 6 July, 2023 – Daniel R. Goldstein, MD will step down as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation (JHLT), due to health reasons. He has served as JHLT EIC since 2021. The transition is effective 1 July 2023. JHLT is the official peer-reviewed journal of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
“For health reasons, I am compelled to step down as Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of this esteemed journal,” said Dr. Goldstein in his final JHLT editorial. The full editorial is available via the JHLT website.
Michelle Kittleson, MD, PhD, has been named JHLT Interim Editor-in-Chief and will serve a term of at least six months. A heart transplant cardiologist and clinical researcher, Dr. Kittleson had been serving as a Deputy Editor on the JHLT editorial
board.
Dr. Kittleson is Director of Education in Heart Failure and Transplantation in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai and Professor of Medicine. She graduated from Harvard College and received her medical degree from Yale University. She completed internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins, and also received a PhD in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr. Kittleson's essays have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, and JAMA Cardiology, she is the author of “Mastering the Art of Patient Care,” (2023, Springer). Her Twitter tips on how to improve patient care, #kittlesonrules, have garnered more than 37,000 followers.
“I am delighted to hand over the reins of EIC to Dr. Michelle Kittleson who, as one of my Deputy Editors, has consistently made greatly insightful decisions about manuscripts,” Dr. Goldstein said. “I am confident of a fantastic and seamless transition.”
Under Dr. Goldstein’s leadership, JHLT maintained its number one ranking in transplantation journals by impact factor for the eighth year in a row. Dr. Goldstein is responsible for the development of the popular JHLT: The Podcast, as well as other innovations that enhanced the Journal’s content and rigorous review process. The ISHLT Board of Directors approved a Resolution in Recognition and Profound Appreciation of Distinguished Service to honor Dr. Goldstein’s work and contributions to JHLT.
“I am proud of the progress and innovation that has occurred during my tenure as EIC of JHLT,” Dr. Goldstein said. “I strove to make the peer review process transparent, fair, and consistently of a high standard. I encouraged submissions in all areas of interest to JHLT including the fields of heart and lung transplantation, pulmonary vascular disease, and mechanical circulatory support. With the support of our highly talented editorial board, I strove to fairly evaluate impactful studies, whether experimental, translational, clinical, or health services research.”
The ISHLT Publications Oversight Committee will launch a search for a new permanent Editor-in-Chief in the coming months.
