ISHLT/O.H. Frazier Grant in MCS Translational Research
Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to support research utilizing MCS that would result in an increased understanding of the biologic effects, use as sole or combined therapy, insights into patient/MCS management, innovative use/application or improved outcomes for the treatment of heart failure.
Grant Details
This grant is aimed to support rising stars in the field of mechanical circulatory support at a critical time in their career. The Grant recipient will have already established a track record in the field of mechanical circulatory support and will aim to further develop their career in this area.
The intent is that the Grant will be for a junior faculty position dedicated to a career in the use of MCS as a treatment option for heart failure. It is anticipated that the individual will be clinician or clinician scientist at an active VAD/transplant program with a faculty appointment in either cardiology or cardiac surgery.
This is a one-year grant in the amount of $65,000.
- The applicant and the applicant's department head/division chief/research project director must be members of the ISHLT in good standing at the time of application and throughout the period of funding.
- The applicant must have Board certification or be Board eligible (within their stated field) and have an academic staff appointment.
- Applicants must have achieved such no more than 3 years prior to the date of application.
- Applicants must have a full-time faculty appointment at a University or other accredited institution of higher learning.
- Applicants must not have already received extramural (external) funding >$40,000 for the same period from any other granting agency. Simultaneous internal funding for the recipient's institution/department is permitted if it is not for the same or closely related research.
- Research must begin between April 1 and December 31 of the grant year.
- The Grant recipient is required to submit at least one abstract to the ISHLT Annual Meeting and one manuscript for publication in the JHLT related to the results of the funded research project.
- The results of funded research cannot have been previously published or presented prior to publication in The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation or presentation at the ISHLT Annual Meeting.
- 14. Funding will be Granted to the institution in three (3) portions. Fifty percent (50%) of the funding will be provided initially, with the remaining funding provided in two (2) twenty-five percent (25%) installments, with one installment paid at six (6) months after the date of initial funding AND upon receipt of an interim progress report, and with the final installment paid at the conclusion of the 1-year funding period AND after receipt of a Final Report. The additional installments of funding will not be made if the project is no longer being conducted at the original institution.
- The proportion of time to be devoted to clinical work and research for each recipient of the Grant should be determined by the recipient's Chair/Chief but not to exceed 50% devoted to research.
- Not more than 25% of the Grant may be used for salary support. The remainder is to be used for supplies and performing the research project.
- $2000 of the Grant is to be allocated for support to travel to the following year's ISHLT meeting.
- The Grant recipient's institution agrees that the funds will be used to cover expenses for the purpose(s) described in the application, that there is not duplicate funding for these purposes, and that no portion of the grant will be used to pay for indirect costs, capital equipment purchases, or institutional overhead. ISHLT funds may not be used for the purchase of capital equipment.
- The Grant recipient's institution agrees to return any unused funds to the ISHLT.
- Either at the time of application or by completion of the grant time period, it is expected that the Grant recipient will meet Joint Commission requirements or the equivalent regarding physician experience to manage/implant Ventricular Assist Devices ("VADs").
- The Grant recipient will learn postoperative care and management of complications after VAD implant.
- The Grant recipient will participate in educational and training programs for mechanical circulatory support.
- The Grant recipient must be a member of ISHLT in good standing throughout the duration of the funding period.
- The Grant recipient is expected to attend the annual ISHLT Scientific meeting during the grant period.
- ISHLT must be acknowledged as a funding source in all manuscripts and presentations derived from the funded research via the following statement: "This work was supported by the O.H. Frazier Award for Translational Research in MCS from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation." Copies of these publications must be submitted to the ISHLT Headquarters office within 1 month of publication.
- The Grant recipient or his/her research project director must be present at the Grants and Awards Presentation ceremony at the ISHLT Annual Meeting to receive acknowledgment of the award.
