Prime Time or Overtime? Lung Transplant in the Elderly
1 March, 2024 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. EST
This webinar will start with the clinical-pathological presentation of an intriguing case by an early career specialist. The patient was a 73-years old male who underwent a single left lung transplantation for rheumatoid arthritis-interstitial lung disease with some aging-related comorbidities. A few days after transplantation, he developed a self-limiting constrictive pericarditis and a persistent mild acute cellular rejection in the follow-up. At 18 months after transplantation, a squamous cell carcinoma was found in the surgical biopsy sampled from the right native lung. The case presentation will offer key discussion points that the expert panelists will address: lights and shadows of transplantation in elderly recipients, both from a clinical (mainly focusing on comorbidities, therapeutic compliance and overall survival) and a pathological (mainly focusing on less or higher risk of post-transplant graft complications, particularly in relation to telomeropathies) point-of-view.
