Winning the Battle but Losing the War? Challenges of Cancer and its Therapies in Heart and Lung Transplant Recipients

Side effects may occur with any kind of cancer therapy. When the cardiovascular and/or respiratory systems are involved, the effects may cause significant morbidity and mortality. Pharmacologic immunosuppression may functionally impair the immunosurveillance of recipients, increasing the risk of cancer development. The majority of these cancers are pathogenically related to oncogenic viruses (e.g HHV8, EBV, HPV), whose control by host immune system is impaired in the transplant setting. In this webinar, we will discuss the pathology of potentially life-threatening cardiovascular and pulmonary complications of cancer therapies. We will also discuss the role oncogenic viruses play in the development of cancer in allografts. Finally, an expert oncologist will discuss the challenging task of diagnosing and managing neoplasia in solid organ transplant patients.
